З Днем Бандури! Happy Bandura Day!

Today, we celebrate the bandura—its history, its music, and its culture. We teach, learn, and play the bandura not only because we love the instrument, but because we love Ukraine—her history, her music, and her culture.

These excerpted pages come from booklets compiled and printed in Cleveland by the Bandura Educational Commission in the 1980s. Across North America, many young student bandurists learned to play using these booklets, and one of the first songs they learned was «Взяв би я бандуру».

So, today, take up your bandura and play whatever you know and love!

We offer in person and virtual lessons to students ages 7 and up. In person lessons take place at the St. Vladimir Ukrainian Cultural Center in Parma, OH. Don’t have a bandura? No problem! You can rent one from us.

To register for lessons this school year, please visit www.hkbanduraschool.org/bandura-lessons or email us at hkbanduraschool@gmail.com. Lessons start the week of September 8.

Throwback to last year when we performed at Severance Hall with string musicians of The Cleveland Orchestra!

This ‘Finale’ performance was the culmination of flutist and resident composer Allison Loggins-Hull’s In Community Chamber Concert Series. Throughout the year, she collaborated with Cleveland based communities, organizations, and musicians, like our school.

This past weekend, Loggins-Hull premiered her new TCO commission ‘Grit. Grace. Glory.’ —a four-movement piece about the city of Cleveland which celebrates its strength, kindness, excellence, and loyalty.

A phenomenal concert this past weekend in Cleveland with the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus of North America (@ukrainianbandura)!

The program featured songs of kozaks and kobzars, words and music by prolific Ukrainian artists and modern heroes on the front, and both traditional and contemporary arrangements. The concert was more than just music—it was a celebration of Ukraine’s cultural heritage and resilience. Все буде Україна!

A year ago today, we had the opportunity to collaborate with the Cleveland Orchestra’s composer-in-residence Allison Loggins-Hull (@alogginshull) and perform with string musicians of the Cleveland Orchestra (@cleveorch). The concert, entitled “Blue & Gold: Colors of the Bandura”, featured works by Hryhory Kytasty, Mykola Lysenko, Valentin Silvestrov, and Caroline Shaw.

Over the course of her residency, Allison worked with community partners, like our school, to build artistic relationships that reflect and engage the Cleveland community. This concert was part of her 2024 In Community Chamber Concert Series.

Yesterday, several of our students and instructors performed Hryhory Kytasty’s “Різдвяні Мотиви” (Christmas Motifs) for parishioners of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Parma, Ohio.

This piece, arranged by Kytasty in 1969 for the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus (@ukrainianbandura), is a medley of the popular Ukrainian Christmas carols Во Вифлеємі, Возвеселімся, and Щедрик. Swipe through to hear each carol in the piece. To watch the full video, go to our Facebook page!
